Welcome to Behind The Scenes with Rajeev! Today, I delve into the transformative potential of Capture One, a tool revered by professional photographers, especially in studio settings. Capture One excels in tethering and color rendering, features that convinced me to transition from Adobe Lightroom over a year ago.
Though Capture One includes AI-driven tools, they don't independently create like Adobe Photoshop's contextual AI. Instead, these tools empower you to work more swiftly and precisely, genuinely simplifying your workflow. Recently, Capture One introduced an exciting feature: the Match Look tool. This innovative tool enables you to match one photograph's look to another, enhancing consistency and aiding your color grading journey.
Exploring the Match Look Tool
Join me as I demonstrate how this tool has revolutionized my editing process. We’re diving into Capture One with a photograph I took in my hometown of Madurai, specifically in a small village called Virattipathu. This image captures a vibrant scene from a night market. My goal is to imbue this photograph with the bluish tones reminiscent of night street photography from Auckland.
To achieve this, I load my Auckland source image to Capture One. I can apply the Match Look tool to my Madurai photograph with a simple click, seamlessly transferring the bluish tone. While highlights can be adjusted as needed, it’s fascinating to navigate through options like exposure, light, contrast, color adjustment, and color tone. These settings enrich the matching process, and applying the look as a new layer offers the flexibility to tweak intensity, akin to using a lookup table in DaVinci Resolve.
One of Match Look’s standout features is its ability to batch apply settings, ensuring uniformity across multiple photos. This tool has been pivotal in maintaining consistency in my work. It allows me to save an edit as a preset and apply it effortlessly to future projects.
The Advantages of Capture One
I hope you find this Capture One tip insightful. While Capture One's learning curve may initially appear steep compared to Lightroom, it rewards perseverance. Its tethering capabilities alone are world-class, offering a compelling reason to switch and never look back.
Before signing off, I want to share another recent project—my latest blog post featuring a photo essay on a Temple Fire Festival from 2023. Revisiting and reediting these photographs with Capture One made them dark, moody, and alive with fire. I’ll link to the blog post in the show notes, and I encourage you to check it out.
Thank you for joining me on this Capture One journey!
